Cornerstones of Freedom: The Saigon Airlift
Published in Paperback by Children's Press (CT) (August, 1994)
Average review score:

The story of more than the end of the war in Vietnam"The Story of the Saigon Airlift" is the only volume in the Cornerstones of Freedom series to deal directly with the Vietnam War, albeit the frantic evacuation of American civilians and Vietnamese refugees during the final days of the war. Other volumes look at incident at Kent State and both the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Womens Veteran Memorial, but not, as near as I can tell, the war itself or key battles such as the Tet Offensive. Consequently, it is not surprising that Zachary Kent looks at more than just the Saigon airlift in this volume. The first part of the book offers young readers a concise account of the history of the war from France granting Vietnam independence in 1954, where upon Democratic nationalists formed a republic in South Vietnam and Communist leader Ho Chi Minh set up a government in North Vietnam, to the fall of Saigon and the end of the war in April 1975, two years after U.S. diplomats signed a cease-fire with the North Vietnamese at the Paris peace talks. The middle part of the book details the airlift, which brought thousands of American civilians and Vietnamese supporters out of the South Vietnamese capital as Communist forces launched their final attack. The first part of the operation used aircraft to remove these people, but once Vietcong rockets damaged the airfield President Gerald Ford issued the order to begin Operation Frequent Wind, which used helicopters for the emergency pullout. Kent provides both the statistical totals on how many people went out on the helicopters each day but also the human details of people trying to flee a city in total collapse. More than the numbers it will be the details, such as using a slide projector to shine a white square on ground of the embassy compound for helicopters to use as a landing strip. The photographs of the line of people stretching down to the ground waiting to get on a helicopter landed on top of the U.S. embassy are clearly our most iconic image of the end of the war. It is also a dramatic centerpiece of the musical "Miss Saigon," but if you have ever seen that show the memory you take away is not the special effect of the helicopter landing and taking off from the embassy, but the terrified screams of anguish, fear and anger by the Vietnamese left behind. Kent does try to give a sense of that, but it is rather hard to do in this sort of a book.
The final part of the book continues the story by telling what happened to the Vietnamese refugees once they reached the United States. The final photograph in the book ironically shows the first two Vietnamese to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Their is an implicit contrast between the photograph of Second Lieutenants Jean Nguyena nd Hung Vu with those of Lance Corporal Darwin L. Judge and Corporal Charles MaMahon, Jr., two marines who were the last American ground troops to die in Vietnam when a rock destroyed their guard post as Tan Son Nhut airport. The decision to include these sort of details as the final part of this juvenile history helps make "The Story of the Saigon Airlift" not only the last chapter in the story of the Vietnam War but also another chapter in the story of immigration to America, which is, all things considered, a neat idea.

Counterpoint (4th Edition)
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall College Div (29 July, 1998)
Average review score:

recommendedThis is the most practical and efficient counterpoint textbook for class room use, the textbook I would use if I were to teach counterpoint in the class room. It is clear and concise and to the point. To gain a broader understanding of counterpoint, I recommend this work be supplemented with Walter Piston's COUNTERPOINT. I also recommend PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.

Deadly Road to Democracy
Published in Paperback by JukeJoint Publishing (01 July, 1998)
Average review score:

Compelling, captivating, illustrative.Since Haiti gained its independence from the French in 1804, volatile governments stifled the country's growth. Although it was the Western Hemisphere's second democracy, the impoverished country remained islolated for many years. However, Marc Yves Regis I has written a personal and provacative story of Haiti's disenchanted poor. Regis, a Hartford Courant photographer, opens the door to Haiti's dark, brutal secrets with explicit photographs taken in his native country. During the last decade, Regis traveled back-and-forth to Haiti, an impoverished country pushed further into dispair in the early 1990s by an international embargo that was supposed to punish an illegal military government. Instead, peasant children starved because food prices rose during the U.S.-led embargo. In addition, armed paramilitary thugs controlled the poor with iron fists. Gunfire rang out each night and dead bodies lined the roads each morning. In the book, Regis uses his mother's voice to tell a poignant story of how the Haitian military and its hired thugs tortured and killed innocent people. The book outlines Haiti's democractic reforms, beginning with the 1990 appointment of the country's first woman president. A year later, Ertha Pascal-Trouillot handed power to Jean-Bertrand Aristide who captured the presidency with an overwhelming 67 percent of the vote in the country's first true, democratic election. The military, however, overthrew the fiery former priest in a bloody coup d'etat. Aristide lived in exile in a plush Washington, D.C. suburb for mare than three years until the United States, in a military show of force, restored him to power.
